Get to Know Our Doctors: 31 Questions with Dr. Emma Ryan

Dr. Emma RyanThe team at MAAC always enjoys getting to know our clients on a more personal level. In addition to learning everything there is to know about their pets, we like finding out what our clients like to do in their spare time, their favorite places in Indy, and what things they are most passionate about in life. This time we thought it would be fun to turn the table so you can get to know our doctors better. We’ve pulled together 31 unique and fun questions that really show our doctors’ personalities, starting with Dr. Emma Ryan. Why 31 questions? Because 20 just wasn’t enough. We also give you 100% permission to bring up any of our doctors answers during your next visit to MAAC. Enjoy learning more below about our talented and lovely veterinarian, Dr. Ryan.

1. What was the most unusual or interesting job you ever had?
Dr. Ryan:
Braiding horse manes and tails at horse shows. This was my first job even before I could drive. The horses all had to be done early in the morning, so my friend Bradley would pick me up around 2am and we would braid all night.

2. At what age did you know you wanted to become a veterinarian?
Dr. Ryan:
Young enough that I signed up for the veterinarian on career day in 5th grade. I had a very impressive Beanie Baby Veterinary Practice set up in my closet.

3. What do you like most about working at MAAC?
Dr. Ryan: Our staff gets along really well together.

4. What fur babies currently live at your house?
Dr. Ryan: Miles and Hank are my two old cats, Finn and Quink have shared custody with my mom and sister, Theo my horse lives half a mile down the road.

5. What is the most recent book you read?
Dr. Ryan: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah.

6. Who is your favorite actor of all time?
Dr. Ryan: Kevin Spacey.

7. Favorite board game of all time?
Dr. Ryan: My husband and I play a lot of really nerdy board games. San Juan and Castles of Burgundy are two favorites.

8. If you were an animated character, who would you be and why?
Dr. Ryan: Rainbow Brite. I just want to wear primary colors and a high ponytail every day.

9. Best vacation or travel spot?
Dr. Ryan: I love Seattle and I love the Bay Area, and any horse show.

10. Do you recall any embarrassing moment at work?
Dr. Ryan: I called a new puppy Max yesterday and then realized Max was the owner’s name, not the puppy’s name.

11. If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?
Dr. Ryan: My cat Miles.

12. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?
Dr. Ryan: Emma Stone or Emma Watson. So many good Emma’s out there.

13. If you could only drink one beer or cocktail for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Dr. Ryan: 
Brugge’s Triple de Rippel.

14. If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Dr. Ryan: Cinnamon rolls.

15. If you were an animal what would you be?

Dr. Ryan:A fox.

16. If you were on death row, what would your last meal be?
Dr. Ryan: Yat’s BandB and Chili Cheese.

17. People would be surprised if they knew:
Dr. Ryan: I learned how to roof through Habitat for Humanity in high school and my mom let me reroof our shed and a neighbor’s shed. The staff at Lowe’s was not taking me seriously when I showed up trying to buy roofing shingles, but I swear I did it myself.

18. What aspect of being a veterinarian do you enjoy the most?
Dr. Ryan: Watching patients grow up and getting to know patient’s families.

19. What do you like to do on your days off?
Dr. Ryan: 
Spend time at the barn with my horse, home improvement projects, and who are we kidding, sometimes I just want to sit on my couch.

20. What is an ability you wish you had?
Dr. Ryan: The ability to read a cat’s mind. How many veterinary problems would be solved with, “Why are you peeing there?” or “Why don’t you want to eat?”

21. What is the first concert you attended?
Dr. Ryan: Ani Difranco.

22. What is the one food item that you can never resist eating?
Dr. Ryan: Dr Glore’s pickle dip. I don’t even like pickles.

23. What is the one thing, you can’t live without?
Dr. Ryan: Podcasts.

24. What is your favorite sport to watch on tv?
Dr. Ryan: The Bachelor.

25. What is your favorite thing to do in the wonderful city of Indianapolis?
Dr. Ryan: Bike ride and dinner downtown or in Broad Ripple.

26. What phobias do you have?
Dr. Ryan: Rollercoasters.

27. What places have you lived in?
Dr. Ryan: Indianapolis. Grinnell, Iowa. Seattle. Adelaide, Australia. Oklahoma.

28. What tv show/movie are you ashamed to admit you love?
Dr. Ryan: My sister and I watched the entire last season of Survivor over the holiday weekend. I may be hooked.

29. What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
Dr. Ryan: Fix up houses or if someone would pay me to sew and paint all day I’d do that.

30. Where is your favorite place to eat in Indy?
Dr. Ryan: Most often – Twenty Tap. Special occasions, Rook or Bluebeard.

31. You’re happiest when?
Dr. Ryan: 
I’m working on an art project.
