The doctors at Mass Ave Animal Clinic are highly trained and experienced professionals. They work side by side with some of the best and caring support staff in the industry to give you and your pets the best medical care. Compassion and concern for your pets’ safety, comfort, and well-being are our top priorities.

The entire team at Mass Ave Animal Clinic has a tremendous desire to meet the amazing people who call Downtown Indianapolis their home. We want to be your neighborhood veterinarians. Mass Ave Animal Clinic is part of City Way Animal Clinics, a small group of veterinary care and pet grooming practices that are 100% veterinarian-owned and operated. Our current locations include Mass Ave Animal Clinic, Fountain Square Animal Clinic, Fall Creek Place Animal Clinic, and Furr Pet Spa & Wellness, all located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis.

Meet our team

DR. KURT PHILLIPS
CEO, Chief Medical Director, Veterinarian

Education:
Butler University, B.S. in Biology, 1992
Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, DVM, 1996

Personal + Professional:
Dr. Phillips has been a veterinarian since 1996, a veterinary clinic owner since 2000, and owner of City Way Animal Clinics since 2012. His special interests include canine reproduction and English bulldogs. When he’s not working, he’s reading up on entrepreneurship, business, and how to craft an excellent cocktail. He enjoys traveling, live music, and good food.

Loves of his Life:
Kurt and his wife, Julia, have two awesome kids, Emma and Jude. They’re empty nesters now, but are still busy taking care of their two dog-kids, Jenner (Vizsla) and Lexington “Lex” (French Bulldog).

KEN CLARKE
Practice Director

Personal + Professional:
Ken brought his passion for health and animals to City Way Animal Clinics in 2011 as a veterinary technician, and has risen through the ranks to our leadership team. He has a passion for community outreach, team culture, and animal wellness. When Ken isn’t making sure things are running smoothly at our clinics, he’s focused on molding a healthy lifestyle. He has a passion for physical and mental health, and you can often find him at the gym.

Loves of his Life:
Ken and his husband, Mark, shower their love and affection on their only French Bulldog child, Augi.

DR. LAURA SMITH
Associate Veterinarian

Education:
Purdue University, B.A. Chemistry (Minor in Psychology), 2000

Michigan Veterinary Specialists, Internship in Small Animal Medicine & Surgery, 2006

Personal + Professional:
Dr. Smith came to City Way Animal Clinics in 2019 with 10 years of prior experience as an emergency veterinarian. She has a special interest in feline practice, fear-free medicine, and surgery. When she’s not at the clinic, she’s researching genealogy and DNA for fun! She is an officer in The Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants and The First Indiana Company of Jamestown Society, and enjoys revolutionary war reenactments.

Loves of her Life:
Laura lives vicariously through her four nieces and one nephew, and loves doting on her three cats, Schizophrenia “Skitz”, Ignatius “Nay”, and Zen.

Dr. Squires brought her fresh perspective and compassion to City Way Animal Clinics in 2018. Her special interests include oncology, internal medicine, and client education. When she’s not at the clinic, she’s running, practicing yoga, and boating with friends and family. She loves the Pacers and IndyCar.

Loves of her Life:
Jessica loves her fur babies! Finch (Yellow English Lab) keeps a watchful eye on his two mischievous siblings, Ford (Tabby cat) and Emmy (spunky tripod kitty.)

Lead Registered Veterinary Technician

Becca brought her positive attitude and hustle to City Way Animal Clinics in 2018. Her special interests include neurology, specifically spinal injuries, and physical rehabilitation. She believes that being the animal’s voice is one of the most important parts of her job. When she’s not at the clinic, she’s hanging out with friends and family and spoiling her nieces and nephew.

Loves of her Life:
Becca and her boyfriend, Pat, shower their rescue dog, Leonard (Boxer mix) with all of their love and affection. Leonard likes his Kong, chewing on bones, and cuddling.

Caroline has flourished at City Way Animal Clinics since 2017 and she has been a CSR since 2016. When she’s not making sure Mass Ave Animal Clinic runs smoothly, she’s cooking or checking out the Indy’s food scene. She enjoys live music, drinking red wine out of a box, and if she never had to work again she would travel the world.

Loves of her Life:
Caroline and her husband, Collan, live in Indy with their two dogs, Earl and Harvey (both mutts); and two cats, Marley and Stella.

Registered Veterinary Technician

Education:
International Business College, Veterinary Technician Institute, A.S., 2014

Personal + Professional:
Ben came to City Way Animal Clinics in 2018, and has been a Registered Veterinary Technician since 2013. His time as an ER/ICU technician at Purdue was one of his greatest learning experiences. When he’s not playing Dungeons & Dragons, he’s hiking, bowling, or biking. He enjoys going to the zoo, reading and writing, drinking awful beer, and taking long walks on the beach. Some of his favorite things include Dr. Pepper, rhinos, and 90s music.

Loves of his Life:
Ben and his wife, Britnee, have been married since 2014. Their favorite girl, Ava, is a Siberian Boxweiler (Siberian Husky, Boxer, + Rottweiler mix) who loves squirrels.

Amber brought her love for all creatures to City Way Animal Clinics in 2019. When she’s not at the clinic, she’s singing, listening to music, and hanging out around Indy. She loves traveling, camping, and nature.

Loves of her Life:
Amber and her partner, Rebecca, take care of a small zoo together! Their dogs Jersey (Pointer mix), Daisy (Pitbull mix), Slim (Lab mix), and Chance (Lab mix) share a home with their four cats, Milo, Neko, Maverick, and Goose. Oh, and don’t forget the two geckos, Mac and Aroni!

Brandon brought his dedication to animal care to City Way Animal Clinics in 2016 and has been a Veterinary Assistant since 2014. His love for animals began early in life on a farm in Southern Indiana. When he’s not at the clinic, he’s gardening, taking care of his plants, and spending time with his cats. He’s passionate about animal care education and loves nature.

Loves of his Life:
Brandon and his partner, Nick, have four cat babies, Mahoney, Manu, Malloy, and Macy; a turtle named Filbert; and Simba, a bearded dragon. Brandon loves to make the cats cardboard clubhouses.

Maria came to City Way Animal Clinics in 2018, but has been a Veterinary Assistant since 2007! She has a special interest in animal behavior and is Fear-Free Certified. When she’s not snuggling her cats, she’s gaming (WOW + Guild Wars II), playing Dungeons & Dragons, or lurking Reddit. Maria is learning digital illustration and loves hiking, reading, and yoga.

Maria and her husband, Andy, share a home with one dog named Finn and six cats, Ferdinand, Rufus, Pug, Darwin, Evie, and Orion.

Lora came to City Way Animal Clinics in 2018, and has been working in the veterinary field since 2007. When she’s not helping clients, she’s camping, reading, and spending time with friends and family. She’s lived in Cincinnati, OH most of her life, but she’s really starting to get into Indy racing!

Loves of her Life:
Lora has four amazing kids, Kyle, Derik, Megan, and Todd. She also shares her home with two dogs, Fatty Girl (Rottweiler) and Bailey (Schnauzer/Chihuahua mix); and three cats, Frankie, Freddie, and Felicia.

Loves of her Life:
JW and his girlfriend, Brittney, adore their two pets, Brodie (Pit/Lab mix) and John (grey tabby).
